Abstract: Abstract This chapter describes the specific political context of museums in Sweden as an introduction to four museums in the southern part of the country that have been studied regarding their organisational and competence challenges. The design of the empirical study is outlined, and detailed descriptions of the museums, including missions and goals, governance and specific challenges that concern the museums are given. The studied museums are Helsingborgs museum, Kulturen, Malmö museum and Regionmuseet Skåne, located in different parts of Skåne and having different orientations yet sharing many development concerns. Common issues across the four museums include the decisive impact of organisational form, the need for multi-competence at the individual employee level and increasing needs for managerial competence.
