A chapter in Competence Management in Museums, 2026, pp 85-99 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract This chapter describes solutions to specific competence challenges at four museums in southern Sweden and identifies several common patterns across them. Common patterns are that staff, including management, increasingly display individual multi-competence, and that the museums regularly map and revalue critical organisational competence. The museums all acquire new competence through recruitment, but also actively assess insourcing and outsourcing of critical organisational competence. Increasingly important competence areas at the studied museums are HR and recruitment, but the development of new services is also linked to new competence areas emerging. Today, digital service development is part of regular development work at the studied museums. Competence development and provision practices at the studied museums include regular workplace meetings and staff conferences, which constitute the backbone of competence management. Additional practices are active involvement of staff in strategic organisational development work and in professional networks, regular competence reporting, and, less frequently, ad hoc projects for the competence development of museum staff.
