A chapter in Competence Management in Museums, 2026, pp 101-109 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract In this chapter, the competence solutions at four museums in southern Sweden described in the previous two chapters are analysed and discussed using the competence-based management as an analytical framework. The chapter emphasises the joint development of museums by all staff, at the same time as museum work is in transition—something which generates tensions between specialisation and multi-competence. It is concluded that the financial paradox of museums is not likely to disappear but rather to become more pressing. The chapter also points to increasing needs for professionalisation of the managerial role at museums and the lack of research in the field that calls for more empirical studies.
