Chapter Chapter 9 in The Consumption Function in Economics, 2026, pp 121-138 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract The main aim of this chapter is to present the methodological setting in which contemporary aggregate consumption theories were developed. It will also discuss the major criticisms that have been applied to this setting by various economists belonging to different intellectual traditions, including heterodox macroeconomists. The chapter will start with a brief overview of the main strands of contemporary mainstream macroeconomics. It will then consider its three fundamental components which are microfoundations, the role of the representative agent, and the unifying framework of methodological individualism. The chapter concludes with a brief overview of the above issues contained in heterodox macroeconomic thinking.
