Abstract:
Abstract Digital impersonation has become an increasingly pervasive form of online abuse in sports, exploiting athletes, teams, fans and the wider sports community across physical and digital arenas. This chapter examines the evolving landscape of impersonation-based attacks, from fake social media profiles and account hijacking to AI-driven deepfakes, phishing scams, and fraudulent ticketing schemes. A key contribution is the introduction of a multi-axis taxonomy of impersonation-based online abuse, categorising incidents by vector, medium, and intended harm. Drawing on real-world cases, it analyses perpetrators’ diverse motivations and explores the psychological, reputational, and systemic consequences for victims and sporting communities. The chapter concludes by evaluating current responses from platforms, sports organisations, and policymakers, highlighting gaps and opportunities for future safeguards in an era where digital authenticity is increasingly contested.
