Chapter Chapter 4 in Inclusive Leadership and Employee Voice, 2026, pp 41-56 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract This chapter explores the factors that prevent employees from expressing their viewpoints within organisational settings. It critically examines the influence of leadership, identifying the traits, behaviours, and styles that foster employee voice while arguing that their absence creates significant barriers to expression. The chapter further explores the cultural values and characteristics that either facilitate or obstruct employee voice within the workplace. It also assesses how specific characteristics of organisational structures influence power dynamics and authority, affecting the avenues available for employee expression. By elucidating the factors that suppress employee voice, the chapter highlights the necessity of inclusive leadership. Such an approach is essential for shaping and integrating the cultural and structural elements that diminish barriers and foster an environment conducive to open communication and employee expression.
