Abstract: Abstract This chapters analyzed a number of major trends in the development of the U.S. trade book publishing industry, including: the rise of different book distributors and independent presses; the growth of the independent book retailers and chains (Barnes & Noble; Books-A-Million; Crown Books, etc.) and mass merchants; price clubs; general retailers; supermarkets; pharmacies; domestic and foreign); pressure on publisher profits with changes in the terms and conditions of sale; the rise of the “Big 6” and independent trade houses; new title output and bestsellers to 2010; the rise of genre fiction; and the creation and successes of online book retailers.
