Chapter 1 in Social Economies, 2026, pp 3-7 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract This chapter lays out the format and provides an overview of each chapter in Social Economics. The primary goal of this book is to examine economies as social constructs, best viewed using insights from a variety of disciplines. This book is for readers who are interested in how economies are connected to other areas of life, readers who want broad perspective. The emphasis is on the interconnectedness of economics with other disciplines, a liberal arts approach—a feature of economics that has been with the discipline since its origination (by the professor of moral philosophy Adam Smith). Incorporation of insights from psychology, leading to the new field of behavioral economics, is an example of how cross-over with other disciplines is enhancing understanding of economies. More recently, interest has expanded to other areas so that now new technologies, methods, and multidisciplinary collaborations are producing insights from psychology, sociology, philosophy, and biology (genoeconomics and neuroscience).
