Chapter Chapter 3 in Conscious Consumption, 2026, pp 85-165 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract Building on the previous chapter’s analysis of ethical consumption as a framework of moral evaluation, this chapter investigates the broader conceptual and practical intersections between ethical consumption and conscious consumption. It begins by disentangling the notions of consciousness and conscious choice, introducing formal models such as the Conscious Utility Model and the Conscious Consumer Model to capture how awareness reshapes decision-making. The analysis clarifies where conscious and ethical consumption overlap and where they diverge, with particular attention to the influence of artificial mediation and algorithmic systems in structuring consumer choice. Motivational dimensions are examined in depth, including personal value orientations, cultural determinants, and institutional influences such as media, education, and NGOs. The discussion further considers the role of peer networks, social legitimacy, and AI-driven normativity in shaping practices of consumption. By situating these dynamics within wider social and cultural contexts, the chapter shows how conscious consumption functions simultaneously as an individual cognitive orientation and as a socially mediated practice. The conclusion reflects on implications for both theory and practice, underscoring the challenges and opportunities of aligning consumer consciousness with ethical responsibility in technologically mediated marketplaces.
