Chapter Chapter 1 in Productive Transformation in Africa, 2026, pp 3-19 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract The chapter provides the background and context for the book. It highlights the conceptual and analytical framework of productive transformation in Africa, underpinned by perspectives on structural transformation, the broader concept of industrial policy as the vehicle of industrial policy, and Amsden’s notion of the “Rise of the Rest.” The chapter introduces the three parts of the book: perspectives and arguments, practices and strategies, and the path forward. Chapter 2 discusses the conceptual framework and arguments on the subject, followed by the historical and analytical review of African industrialisation. In Part II, the chapters provide a cross-sectoral diagnosis, comparative country case studies, and comparative policy reviews to elaborate on the practices and strategies for productive transformation in Africa. Part III reviews the foundational concept that productive transformation is a driver of African economic integration and the genesis of African integration. The final chapter provides the framework for the future of productive transformation and industrialisation in Africa.
