Abstract: Abstract This chapter surveys the canonical types of information systems: Transaction Processing Systems (TPS), Management Information Systems (MIS), Decision Support Systems (DSS), Executive Support Systems (ESS), and enterprise applications such as ERP/CRM/SCM, while demonstrating their functions through contemporary exemplars. TPS are illustrated with Stripe’s high-volume, ACID-compliant payment flows; MIS/DSS/ESS capabilities with IBM Cognos’ governed reporting, exploratory analysis, and executive dashboards; ERP integration via Microsoft Dynamics 365; and analytics with Microsoft Power BI’s semantic models and governed self-service. Building on these cases, the chapter argues that once-distinct categories increasingly converge into a single integrated platform anchored by shared data models, an integration fabric, and a governed semantic layer that enables near-real-time decisioning. The discussion foregrounds prerequisites for trust and resilience, data governance, data quality SLAs, reliability/observability, security-by-design, and financial operations, and situates human-in-the-loop decision making as essential for accountability at managerial and executive levels. Industry-specific systems like an ERP are framed as extensions of the core stack. The chapter thus provides a pragmatic taxonomy, contemporary reference points, and an architectural synthesis, positioning “system types” as analytic lenses within a cohesive, data-centric enterprise platform rather than rigid operational silos.
