Abstract: Abstract Quantum Information Science (QIS) is a key cross-cutting scientific field of the twenty first century, with potentially groundbreaking applications expected to affect every field of human activity. It has the potential to revolutionize data creation, processing, and transmitting capabilities of information systems, leading to novel products and services beyond anything possible in the classical realm. This chapter provides a comprehensive overview of QIS. We begin with a historical overview of the field, starting from the birth of quantum mechanics and its progression through the first and second quantum revolutions. Following the explanation of the foundational concepts of QIS, we explain the first and currently ongoing second quantum revolution and its key subfields of quantum computing, quantum communication, quantum simulation, and quantum sensing. For each one of these key fields, we discuss key application areas. The topics of the socio-technical challenges that societies are expected to face in adopting quantum technologies, along with research directions related to the future of IS, are purposefully left to Chapter 8 .
