Abstract: Abstract This chapter addresses the research question of how to assess the requirements, implementation progress, and barriers to achieving Industry 5.0 for Small Medium Enterprises (SMEs). The requirements that are identified for SMEs are based on Industry 5.0 functional requirements using a design decomposition approach and taxonomy. The degree of achievement of these functional requirements is determined by industry participants who have completed a self-assessment questionnaire. The benefit of using the questionnaire based on an Industry 5.0 design decomposition is two-fold. First, the design decomposition provides a comprehensive means to define the functional requirements of Industry 5.0, i.e. what Industry 5.0 must achieve, and secondly, the decomposition provides a framework to assess how well the functions of Industry 5.0 are achieved by industry participants themselves with functional requirements metrics, which serve as a category of key performance indicator. The impact of using this self-assessment approach is to offer a framework to define the vision of Industry 5.0 in terms of the functional requirements that must be achieved, the solutions to achieve the requirements, and the performance measures to assess how well the functional requirements are achieved. This chapter presents an Industry 5.0 design decomposition and sets the stage for the development of a self-assessment questionnaire and findings that are presented in Chap. 2 .
