Chapter 4 in Excursions in Ring Theory, 2026, pp 299-377 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract This chapter is devoted to the study of a class of rings that are called exchange rings, later a.k.a. suitable rings. At the early stage of this study, the inspiration came from the seminal work on the direct decomposition of algebraic systems initiated (as early as in 1947) by Jònsson and Tarski in [JT]. With further impetus from the classical work of Wedderburn, Remak, Krull, Schmidt and Baer, Crawley and Jònsson published their influential paper [CJ] in 1964 on the study of isomorphic refinements of (possibly infinite) direct decompositions.
