Chapter 9 in Big Money, Better World?, 2026, pp 145-152 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract Sustainable investing has genuine potential. But potential is not impact. This concluding chapter asks what it would take to close the gap and finds that scale is the decisive factor. Sustainable investing works best when many investors screen consistently, send coherent signals to companies, and compete within mainstream portfolios rather than at their margins. Two actors are best positioned to unlock that scale: asset owners, who must demand better and more rigorous sustainability approaches from their managers; and policymakers, who must price externalities and remove the regulatory barriers that currently make sustainable investing harder than it should be.
