Abstract:
Abstract At the end of the nineteenth century some italian mathematicians got deeply interested in Lie’s theory of transformations groups. The aim of this paper is to discuss an episode of this story which happened in Bologna. It is about the fruitful interactions between Tullio Levi-Civita, Salvatore Pincherle and Federigo Enriques, which finally led to the classification of infinite dimensional Lie groups acting on three dimensional space by Ugo Amaldi.
