Chapter Chapter 12 in The Scholar and the State: In Search of Van der Waerden, 2015, pp 81-95 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract This chapter addresses Hitler’s ascent to power, with a surprising support of academics. We learn about a lone Einstein’s public anti-Nazi position, criticized by some leading American and German leading scholars. And we learn how the initial American policy of appeasement toward Nazi Germany slowly shifts to disapproval.
