Chapter Chapter 15 in The Scholar and the State: In Search of Van der Waerden, 2015, pp 113-139 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract This key chapter describes in a full detail Van der Waerden’s and Heisenberg’s 1935 heroics in publicly speaking against firing of Jewish professors at Leipzig. It also presents a compromise Heisenberg struck with Himmler, eerily reminding the contract of Dr. Faust with the Devil.
