Chapter Chapter 20 in The Scholar and the State: In Search of Van der Waerden, 2015, pp 181-198 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract Most of all, Van der Waerden desired a professorship at Göttingen. For this task he recruited Nazi helpers, Wilhelm Süss and Helmut Hasse. Was it fitting for a “strong opponent of the Nazi regime” to seek help of the Nazis? Is it fitting for us, mathematicians, to ignore—or be ignorant—of the Nazi roots of our beloved Mathematics Institute at Oberwolfach?
