Abstract: Zusammenfassung Die Variationsrechnung, der Euler eine Reihe seiner besten Arbeiten gewidmet hat, verdankt dem größten Mathematiker des 18ten Jahrhunderts nicht nur ihren Narren, Calculus variationum, sondern auch ihr erstes Lehrbuch. Dieses erschien im Jahre 1744 bei Bousquet in Lausanne und Genf unter dem Titel “Methodus inveniendi lineas curvas maximi minimive proprietate gaudentes sive solutio problematis isoperimetrici latissimo sensu accepti’. Carathéodory nannte die Methodus inveniendi “eines der schönsten mathematischen Werke, die je geschrieben worden sind”.
