Non-Homogeneity of βP - P

Zdeněk Frolík

A chapter in The Mathematical Legacy of Eduard Čech, 1993, pp 97-99 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract This is to answer a question I have been asked repeatedly by my colleagues since my proofs (independent of the continuum hypothesis) of non-homogeneity of ßℕ — ℕ were preprinted. It turns out that both methods, that one depending on the author’s estimate of the cardinal of the set of all relative types of a given point of ßℕ — ℕ (see [1]), and also that one depending on the author’s non-fixed point theorem (see [2] and [3] or [4]), work in general situation. What is needed in addition is not too much, however, perhaps a little bit surprising, see Lemma and its Corollary 2 below. Non-homogeneity problems for extremally disconnected spaces will be treated in a forthcoming paper.
