A chapter in Finsler Set Theory: Platonism and Circularity, 1996, pp 85-102 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract The earliest of Finsler’s set theoretic papers, On the Foundations of Set Theory, [1926b] remains the most important. The original title included the words: Part I. Sets and their Axioms; he expected to develop the theory further in a second part. When Part II finally appeared in [1964] it contained replies to some of Finsler’s critics rather than positive developments of the theory. Part II is the last paper in this section, they have been ordered chronologically, but it is also of less mathematical importance than the others. Large parts of it are polemical; these parts reveal a dramatic clash between formalism and Platonism that bring a better understanding of the history of the foundational crisis. This relatively long paper also contains scattered but interesting, positive developments of the set theory presented in Part I. Before undertaking Part II one should see section VI below, of this introduction, for some background remarks on the axiom of completeness.
