A chapter in Information and Communication Technologies in Tourism 2008, 2008, pp 232-243 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract This paper explores through a case study approach the progress in the development VisitScotland.com, Scotland’s national destination portal. A brief history of Destination Management System (DMS) developments in Scotland is provided to contextualise current activities and the work examines current developments with particular regard to VisitScotland.com’s business model, issues surrounding its Public-Private Partnership configuration and an analysis of key performance indicators. Findings show that whilst there are still substantial obstacles to be overcome particularly with regards to engagement and long term financial viability, VisitScotland.com seems to have set in place the appropriate business model and technology infrastructure to become an effective DMS for Scotland
