A chapter in Mathematics, Substance and Surmise, 2015, pp 347-363 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract Inspired by the work of Abraham Seidenberg, on the ritual origins of counting, as well as contemporary philosophical work on the embodied nature of mathematical concepts, this chapter proposes an alternate way of approaching number that places much more emphasis on ordinality, rather than cardinality, and that highlights number's temporality. This conception of number is then shown to be at play in the way young children engage with TouchCounts, an App designed to support early number sense.
