A chapter in Gems of Combinatorial Optimization and Graph Algorithms, 2015, pp 1-12 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract We begin with two problems which do not appear to be related. Then we use the ‘air-pressure’ method to prove a theorem about rectangular dissections with prescribed rectangle areas. A corollary to this theorem characterizes area-universal rectangular dissections. These dissections happen to be central to the solution of the two problems.
