Abstract:
Abstract Throughout the years, the corporate social responsibility Social Responsibility social responsibility (CSR) Corporate Social Responsibility agenda has been wrought from distinctive theories and approaches. Initially, this term was typically used when evaluating the effects of business on society and the environmentEnvironment. As a matter of fact, the earliest contributors had associated CSR with corporate philanthropyCorporate Philanthropy, stewardshipstewardship principlesPrinciples and business ethicsbusiness ethics. Yet, the businesses’ way of thinking has changed dramatically since Friedman (1962, 1970) and Levitt (1958) held that the companies’ only responsibility was to maximise their owners’ and shareholders’ shareholdersShareholders wealth. Similarly, with an entrepreneurial stance, Drucker (1984, p. 62) characterised CSR as a way of tackling ‘social problem(s)’ to engender positive ‘economic benefit(s)’ to ensure ‘well paid jobs, and... wealth’.
