A chapter in Engineering Education 4.0, 2016, pp 877-894 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract The teachers’ job at universities is to give students the chance to develop knowledge, skills and competences. In many cases this is summed up by a general discussion on competences. With this paper we combine various approaches to the term ‘competence’. On the one hand we discuss competence development and integrate the discussion on taxonomies. On the other hand we present different alternatives to cluster the general term competence into different areas: for example a personal and a professional area. The combination of both approaches leads us to a newly and holistically defined competence model. With the help of this model it is possible to similarly describe existing courses with regard to the intended competence development and addressed competence areas. To verify our developed model we proof it by analyzing intended learning outcomes of a course and discuss the findings.
