Abstract: Abstract Aim of this project is to investigate the impact of aerosol in high resolution climate runs. At the moment aerosols and their interactions with radiation and clouds represent one of the major uncertainties in our understanding of the climate system as they can be described only roughly in coarse resolution global models. The online coupled comprehensive chemistry model system COSMO-ART already showed in several case studies the potential of closing this gap. In order to apply it on decadal climate time scales the use of high performance computing becomes a necessity. In this study we quantified the effect of replacing the aerosol climatology usually used in regional climate simulations with CLM by online calculated dust concentrations. The model domain covered the DEPARTURE region. Only radiation feedback was accounted for neglecting aerosol cloud interactions. Interactive dust improved the agreement of simulated precipitation in comparison with observations.
