Curves and Tangents
Craig Smoryński ()
Chapter Chapter 2 in MVT: A Most Valuable Theorem, 2017, pp 7-149 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract The central concepts underlying the Mean Value Theorem are those of curves and tangents. The evolution of these concepts from the Greeks through the end of the 19th century is discussed, along with the crystallisation of the formal definitions of limit, continuity, and derivative. The chapter culminates with geometrically motivated derivations of the Mean Value Theorem itself.
