Chapter 10 in Handbook Integrated Care, 2017, pp 149-163 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract There is agreement that governance is essential for successful reform of integrated care systems. As the roles of patients, communities and diverse organizations as partners for health evolve, we require new tools and processes that create clear and transparent accountability relationships. The first two sections of this chapter cover theoretical aspects, including how governance and accountability are conceptualized and specific considerations of governance and accountability in integrated health systems. The latter two sections focus on the practical aspects of implementing governance and accountability into integrated health systems and the tools needed to support its implementation. The multiple models of integrated care evolving globally offer a unique opportunity for governance innovations to manage the complex partnerships in integrated health systems.
