A chapter in Exploring the Riemann Zeta Function, 2017, pp 265-285 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract This is an essay about the reputation that Riemann has acquired as a difficult writer, a reputation which has, if anything, grown over the years. An awareness of the developments in mathematics, and, in particular, in mathematical physics at that time shows that Riemann was working in a very specific environment and that his thinking reflects this environment. It is therefore helpful to know something of this background. Riemann’s short paper on the distribution of prime numbers has been the subject of considerable discussion and we shall consider this paper in particular.
