Abstract:
Abstract Let me begin by expressing my appreciation to the Scientific Committee for awarding me the 2016Wigner Medal, and to those on the Organizing Committee who have made it possible for me to be here tonight as well as all of you who are sharing with me in this great honor. The carefully chosen wording on this beautiful medal –“For fundamental work in representation theory that led to new branches of mathematics and physics” – resonates deeply with me, and captures the spirit of Wigner’s phrase, “the unreasonable effectiveness of mathematics in the physical sciences.”
