Chapter Chapter 1 in Comprehensive Applied Mathematical Modeling in the Natural and Engineering Sciences, 2017, pp 1-5 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract Fifty yearsComprehensive applied mathematical modeling|( ago the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) sponsored a Conference on Education in Applied Mathematics that was held in Aspen, Colorado, from 24–27 May 1966 and hosted by the University of Denver. The proceedings of that conference were published in SIAM Review (1967) 9, pp. 289–415. Chia-Chiao LinLin, C.C. of MIT, in his contribution to that proceedings, defined what he termed Comprehensive Applied Mathematicians as individuals who have a thorough knowledge, understanding, and appreciation of the proper relationship between mathematics and all the sciences and who professionally devote themselves to the totality of such phenomenological modeling. These people are neither pure mathematicians with an interest in certain specializations of the theoretical sciences, nor are they theoretical scientists with an acquired expertise in a given subdiscipline of mathematics closely related to their particular field.
