Abstract:
Abstract Ghana boasts a GDP of over $121 billion in purchasing power parity; its per capita GDP of $4400 makes it one the wealthiest nations in West Africa. Ghana was the first sub-Saharan country to earn independence and it has been a relatively stable democracy for more than two decades. Its economy flourished for years due to a competitive business environment but has struggled recently because of government’s mismanagement of fiscal and monetary policy and double-digit inflation. With a score of 56.0, Ghana ranks 122 in the Heritage Index (see Table 13.1). Compared to its 47 sub-Saharan neighbors, Ghana’s economy ranks 19, a few points below the world’s average score in the Index (Miller et al. 2018). Other assessments are more favorable, however, as US-based Freedom House gave Ghana the highest ranking in mainland Africa, recognizing the nation for halving the proportion of its population in extreme poverty well ahead of UN goals (White and Ward 2017).
