Analysis of an IA-64 Based High Performance VIA Implementation

Abstract: Abstract Virtual Interface Architecture (VIA), which establishes a communication model with low latency and high bandwidth, is the industry standard for user level communication. In this paper, THVIA64, a hardware support VIA implementation based on IA-64 platform, is analyzed from three aspects, compatibility, stability and performance. Compatibility test shows how well it supports both for traditional network protocol, such as TCP/IP and VIA. Stability test measures how well it can transfer a large number of packages for both small and large data within a very long test time. The performance data are tested and compared on two different kinds of networks, Gigabyte Ethernet and THNET64. The test results show that THVIA64 is a compatible, stable and high performance implementation of VIA based on IA-64 platform for cluster computing.
