Islamic Patterns: The Spark in Escher’s Genius

Abstract: Abstract It is generally known that Escher was influenced by Islamic patterns. In fact Islamic patterns played a key role in his personal “metamorphoses” which transformed his art. In this article I will first highlight the impact of Islamic patterns on Escher’s artistic development and correct some major misconceptions about the driving psychology behind these patterns. After that, I will show some examples of my own art which sets out to develop and extend Islamic patterns. I will also explain what inspires me.
