Dethronement of the Symmetry Plane

István Hargittai

A chapter in M.C. Escher’s Legacy, 2003, pp 353-365 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract There is a whole variety of Escher’s works that I like looking at, thinking about, or discussing with friends. They include his drawings of wild flowers, Italian scenery, “impossible figures,” and periodic drawings. My favorite is his wild flowers. They are as forceful as they are subtle. They stress the essential and ignore the rest, which is also the characteristic of good scientific models of nature. I anticipate, however, that Escher’s periodic drawings will have the longest lasting impact of all his works. The present contribution probes into their appeal for scientists.
