Abstract: Abstract Different axially oriented casing treatments were developed and tested numerically. Their influence on the flow of an axial transonic compressor stage was investigated by means of unsteady simulations. Total pressure ratio as well as efficiency were increased along the entire design speed line by applying cavities to the original geometry of the compressor. Due to a reduction of blockage, which is induced by the tip gap vortex, the stable operating range could be increased significantly. Furthermore the Non-Linear Harmonic Method (NLHM) was applied to compute the compressor flow. The results were compared to the numerical solution of the unsteady Navier-Stokes equation using the Spalart-Allmaras turbulence model. Therefore the unsteady results were transformed into the frequency domain by means of a Fast Fourier Transformation. The accounted frequencies were reduced to the ones included in the NLHM approach and compared to the corresponding results.
