Chapter 9 in Managing Innovation from the Land of Ideas and Talent, 2009, pp 235-244 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract The world has certainly become a little flatter during the last 10 years. Thomas Friedman’s book “The world is flat” starts with his tee-off at the KGA (Karnataka Golf Association) Golf course in Bangalore, where he was asked to aim the ball ‘towards Microsoft and IBM’, indicating to which large extent the city was and is shaped by the presence of the international IT companies (Friedman 2007). Ten years ago, the very same tee-off had already occurred, but if one had missed the green, the ball would not have landed in Microsoft’s courtyard, but on a piece of barren land. We still remember our first trip from Bangalore City to the Whitefield industrial area in 1997, where SAP Labs is located today. The route was dotted with several farm houses and nurseries, it was lush green, and one could occasionally see bullock carts on mud roads. It was a peaceful country- side scenery. The Discoverer Block of ITPL was coming up, and the only other landmark visible from there was the Container Corporation of India. We heavily debated the feasibility of working from a location like Whitefield as SAP was one of the very first companies considering to move there. It seemed so remote, a village outpost of Bangalore. Today, an estimated number of 50,000 IT engineers come to Whitefield alone, every day, while another 100,000 try to make it to Electronic City in the South of Bangalore. And many more live and work in different areas of the city.
