Abstract: Abstract This book is the central contribution of the German Academy of Science and Engineering acatech to the “Year of Mathematics” in which the importance of mathematics and the many facets of this discipline were presented to the general public in Germany in 2008. This volume discusses the relationship of mathematics and the engineering sciences, it illuminates the contribution of mathematics to the industrial creation of value and the key position of mathematics in the handling of complex systems, in other words, the role of mathematics as a production factor and amplifier for innovations. The volume not only presents the state-of-the-art, it also points out strengths and weaknesses, it sketches future directions for research and development and it suggests activities to improve the interaction between mathematics and engineering as well as between academic and industrial research.
