The “Manager” as a Species

Abstract: Abstract Managers are born locally but their habitat is global. Culture and language are the wrapping around the fundamental drivers of human behaviour and this behaviour is universal. It is this universality of the drivers of human behaviour which allows “managers” to be considered as a species. In any enterprise appointing the right people to the right positions is critical to its success. But success can only be judged after the event and choosing mangers is concerned with the likelihood of success. “Goodness” in a manager is similar to an asset in a balance sheet. It is different to “success” or “failure” which can be likened to a profit and loss account. A manager improves by strengthening his balance sheet and finding the right manager is an assessment of his balance sheet. There are nine fundamental attributes to look for in a “good” manager and these are both necessary and sufficient. It is the “goodness” of the manager which increases the probability of success.
