Chapter Chapter 4 in Guide to Supply Chain Management, 2011, pp 53-73 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract This chapter guides you through the make function of supply chain management. It is important to understand this function as it describes the most capital-intensive step in many product supply chains. This chapter is split into three sections. First, the make function is introduced along with manufacturing planning and control as part of the manufacturing set up. Second, the concept of just-in-time and its impact on manufacturing efficiency is presented. Third, lean thinking and tools for improvement will be depicted. The chapter concludes with a case study of best practice on lean manufacturing within the company Unipart. Having read this chapter you will be able to: Explain what the make function is and how it fits into the supply chain Clarify how to set-up manufacturing Identify just-in-time strategies and their value for manufacturing efficiency Recognise how lean thinking tools and techniques can improve the manufacturing process
