A chapter in The Roots of Logistics, 2012, pp 229-244 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract Decisions about the location of facilities (“nodes”) are one fundamental task in building logistical networks, which economists and mathematicians started to tackle in the 19th century already (see the article by Launhardt (1882) in this volume). Decisions relating to the assignment of vehicles, orders, possibly crews and container equipment to routes between the nodes of a network, are a fundamental task of network operations.
