A chapter in The Roots of Logistics, 2012, pp 245-267 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract Next to location planning (cf. Launhardt (1882) in this volume) and routing (cf. Clarke/Wright (1964) in this volume) there are the fundamental issues in running industrial logistical systems of setting the quantitative levels of production capacities, lot sizes, optimal inventories and their dynamic interactions, as order taking, production and delivery operations need to be scheduled along time lines.
