A chapter in The Roots of Logistics, 2012, pp 269-286 from Springer
Abstract:
Abstract In tracing the roots of the Science of Logistics in this collection of precursors and classical contributions to field, a rich array of terminological, conceptual, and methodological innovations has been uncovered so far. They provide answers to questions which concern the field’s identity as a science. If one reviews these answers and questions, it becomes apparent, that most of them deal with “networks and flows of objects through time and space”, aiming to “supply recommendations for action on the design, implementation and mobilization of such flows and networks” at rather abstract, strategic level: How is it that logistics creates utilities and value in an economy? What is the specific perspective which distinguishes logistics from other fields of science? What do we know about appropriate architectures of logistical systems?
