Abstract: Abstract With the improvement of recording density of multi-level (ML) optical storage system, more serious burst errors will be caused by the same degree of scratches on the surface of disc in ML optical disc than conventional optical recording systems such as DVD. In this paper we present a new error correction code (ECC) scheme on the basis of improving original ECC scheme. The scheme is composed of two blocks. One is used to generate erasure information through the error-only decoding and the other carries out error and erasure decoding according to the erasure information provided from one. The code rate of the proposed scheme is up to 87.9% and the maximum correctable length of burst errors is 7104 bytes. The simulation result shows that the new scheme is qualified and effective for multi-level (ML) optical system.
