Abstract: Abstract We apply an evolving surface finite element method (ESFEM) to a mathematical model for diffusion induced grain boundary motion. The model involves the coupling of a diffusion equation on a moving surface to an equation for the motion of the surface. We formulate a finite element approximation of the model which involves triangulated surfaces whose vertices move in time. We present numerical simulations.
