Abstract: Abstract In order to help drivers get traffic information more easily and accurately, a new regional traffic information disseminating system based on ZigBee and GPRS is introduced in this paper. The system consists of two main components: an Information Sending Device (ISD) fixed on the roadside which sends traffic information as well as an Information Receiving Device (IRD) equipped in vehicles which receives traffic information. Real-time traffic information is sent to ISDs through GPRS network by traffic information management center. Then ISD disseminates the information timely and accurately to IRDs through ZigBee network. At last the traffic information is broadcasted vocally to drivers using Text To Speech (TTS) technology by IRD. The hardware structure and software design are presented respectively. The system is tested in Chegongzhuang Street, Beijing. The test results show that the system works well and drivers can obtain traffic information accurately and timely.
