Abstract: Zusammenfassung Die Arithmetica des Diophantos stellt einen spektakulären Einzelfall der griechischen Mathematik dar, wobei es, weder vorher noch nachher, ein vergleichbares Werk gegeben hat. Seine trickreichen und genial erdachten Ansätze lösen eine ganze Reihe von algebraischen und zahlentheoretischen Problemen. Die von ihm angestoßene Theorie der Diophantischen Gleichungen eröffnet auch in der heutigen Mathematik ein wichtiges Forschungsgebiet.
