Chapter Chapter 1 in Introduction to Probability and Statistics for Engineers, 2013, pp 1-4 from Springer

Abstract: Abstract The theory of probability and mathematical statistics is becoming an indispensable tool in the analysis of many contemporary tasks in engineering and science. Wide-ranging experience confirms that probability is one of the most important concepts in modern science (Bertrand Russell 1929). In spite of that, comprehensive understanding of the fundamental principles of the theory of probability and statistics still seems to be inadequate. Consequently, the results of numerous applications are often understood and interpreted loosely and imprecisely.
